چکیده

Motivated by the design of a future autonomous, decentralized air traffic management system for runway-independent aircraft, a biologically-inspired reactive collision avoidance algorithm is developed for a simple model of managing multiple vehicle systems. Techniques using gyroscopic forces and scalar potentials result in all vehicles arriving at their destinations within a reasonable time, with no collisions. Demonstrations involving over 100 vehicles in a crowded cross-traffic setting with buildings have been simulate with no collisions observed. The control approach has two key features, both of which are desirable for on-board implementation: it uses only locally sensed information and is computationally cheap. mm—Wave Collision Avoidance Sensors: Future Directions

Passive millimeter—wave detection is advantageous for detection of objects obscured by rain, steam or other aerosols. This coupled together with collision avoidance techniques, based on biologically inspired insect vision models, promises compact low—cost solutions that do not require hardware—intensive image processing. This paper examines a number of possible future directions by identifying ...

Biologically Inspired Multi-Robot Foraging (Demonstration)

In this demonstration we illustrate the direct usage of the principles of bee-inspired coordination in swarm intelligence on multi-robot systems. We present the first results of this implementation, where a subset of the bee algorithms are implemented on multiple turtlebot robots with the goal to simulate a food foraging application. For this we implemented means for locally detecting the locat...

Bio-inspired Obstacle Avoidance: From Animals to Intelligent Agents

A considerable amount of research in the field of modern robotics deals with mobile agents and their autonomous operation in unstructured, dynamic, and unpredictable environments. Designing robust controllers that map sensory input to action in order to avoid obstacles remains a challenging task. Several biological concepts are amenable to autonomous navigation and reactive obstacle avoidance. ...

Time To Contact for Obstacle Avoidance

Time to Contact (TTC) is a biologically inspired method for obstacle detection and reactive control of motion that does not require scene reconstruction or 3D depth estimation. TTC is a measure of distance expressed in time units. Our results show that TTC can be used to provide reactive obstacle avoidance for local navigation. In this paper we describe the principles of time to contact and sho...

Real-time collision-free path planning and tracking control of a nonholonomic mobile robot using a biologically inspired approach

In this paper, a novel biologically inspired neural network approach is proposed for real-time collision-free path planning and tracking control of a nonholonomic mobile robot in a nonstationary environment. The real-time robot trajectory with obstacle avoidance is generated by a topologically organized neural network, where the dynamics of each neuron is characterized by a shunting equation. T...
